The best MOOC platforms of 2018

Hi everyone,

I came across this remarkable study where the best MOOC platforms of 2018 have been introduced.

Rank-Site Name-Total
#1 Coursera 9.5
#2 edX 6.6
#3 Udacity 6.3
#4 FutureLearn 5.6
#5 iversity 2.7
#6 Cognitive Class 1.2

Coursera placed first in every core metric except Course Diversity.
Core Metric Scores
Credentialing: 10
Course Diversity: 8
Course Features: 10
Social Features: 10
Partner Institutions: 10

What do you think about the results? Have you taken courses on the other mentioned platforms as well? How would you rank them?

Thanks!

Thank you @Maryam for sharing this ranking with us. It's great to see these platforms all in one place. I did not even know Cognitive class existed. I have taken classes on the other platforms too except Udacity. I heard of Udacity but never looked at it. I think each platform has their own characteristic that appeals to me. It would be hard to choose one over the other. What do others think?
Very intery, @Maryam ! I donโ€™t have any experience with otherMOOCs so I cannot compare. I do know that Coursera seems to be the largest and most well known. They have also been around a while too at the beginning of MOOc popularity.

Thank you for sharing this information with us, @Maryam.
Same here, I never knew Cognitive class nor iversity existed. Have you heard of Udemy? Well, I took a totally free course on Udemy; the audio-visuals cannot be compared with that of Coursera.
I have also experienced edX, the audio-visuals are good ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป The course works are simplified but the quizzes are something else (very difficult). The quizzes are one-attempt which is not encouraging, and the verification process is stressful.
On the other hand, Coursera is more like a real life classroom where you tackle difficult class works to prepare you for the practice quiz and then the ultimate week quiz. Coursera encourages learners by allowing them attempt quizzes more than once. The audio-visuals are good too. It has more partners, which got me attracted to it at a glance before trying it out.

I'll stick with Coursera anytime any day! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ˜Š
@Denise, Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, every platform has definitely its own characteristics. For example, each platform has its unique pricing model. Thus, this study has not included this aspect. The study has just highlighted some common researchable areas. They have clearly explained how those metrics and sub-metrics have been identified in the Full Methodology and Metric Walk-Through section.
@Judith, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Coursera has been a platform not only for learning new subjects but also for getting to know new people from all over the world and developing valuable friendships with them.
@Terry , I was not familiar with those two platforms either, but I knew Udemy. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
One of the outstanding points in the results is the interval between the first place (9.5) and the second place (6.6). This could also explain why you would like to remain a loyal Courserian. 🙂
Yes, that is so true about Coursera @Maryam and @Terry re: quizzes and developing friendships. I also like the time flexibility on Coursera's quizzes to complete the courses on your own pace while in other platforms it may not be always possible, depending on the course providers.
@ Maryam the friendships developed through Coursera are wonderful! To be able to meet so many interesting people from all cultures and region of the world and learn how much we have in common has been such an incredible experience!

Informative share @Maryam. I guess i have more reasons to support the reviews shown above than get into any disagreement with the the fact that Coursera has earned maximum points making them reign as no 1 in the list. Also, since they have articulated facts and figures and their method of assessing, the whole picture looks more evident now. I have taken courses on edx and Udemy. Although, i am surprised Udemy didn't get any place, as they too have many outstanding independent educators, i am not that surprised at Coursera standing among the best as the criteria for selecting Partner Institutions at Coursera to Launching Courses on Coursera, they go through many processes so that the quality remains the topmost priority for them.

It seems there are no less than 177 strong Partners at Coursera which speaks volumes about the massive popularity of Coursera not only among masses but Institutions and Corporations. One can get to know them here. Partners
Mohammad, this was so interesting! When you read about how many partners are involved with Coursera it is so impressive. You can understand why they are number one. Thank you for sharing this with us.
@Mohammad Sameer Hasan, thanks a lot for your input. I understand your point about Udemy. This is certainly a good platform; however, in this study the researchers had to eliminate it right from the beginning.

"...platforms that function as open hosting sites where anyone can create a MOOC, or those that were exclusively designed for corporate training."

Many thanks for sharing this Maryam. Moocs and here on this platform, Coursera have in my view a bright future. And as we can see, so many universities participate at the mooc business, and this is a nice mark of confidence.
My pleasure, @Marcus. Yes, indeed, it seems the future of MOOC-based education is bright. MOOC-based degrees have become popular due to their advantages. We discussed it here if you wish to take a look at that too. Thank you for your contribution.
