Hi everyone. I’m Vladimir. I’m a Los Angeles, CA resident and I am new to the world of IT. I’ve always loved computers and it wasn’t until recent that I decided to pursue it as a career. I am hoping to gain practical experience in IT very soon. If anyone knows of a company that hires entry level IT I would greatly appreciate you sharing the information. I look forward to learning a lot and hopefully meeting some of you irl along the way!

Hi Vladimir! Congrats on wanting to get into IT, the field is always in demand and there are man opportunities. I am an IT Project Manager and my advice to you would be to think of an area you'd like to specialize in. The IT world is vast, and typically people that specialize tend to do very well. As far as getting your foot in the door, I would recommend starting with desktop support, you will learn valuable troubleshooting skills and how to deal with clients/customers.

The last thing I will leave you with is that when you work in IT you are committing to lifelong learning - the world of technology by its nature changes rapidly and you need to be aware of these changes/trends to keep up.

Best of luck!

Hi Juan,

thanks for the information! I will definitely look into entry level desktop support jobs. I’ve worked in retail for nearly 10 years in security management, now I’m hoping to bring those customer service and analytical skill sets to the IT industry.

Hi Vladimir,

That is exciting that you are interested in starting a new career in IT!
Have you heard of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate program offered on Coursera? It consists of 5 courses that can help you learn the fundamentals of IT Support and can help you get job ready for an entry level role in IT Support. It's a great place to start learning about the field and build skills with the projects that are included.

Here's a story from Tristen who started a new career in IT last year. Here's some advice from IT support professionals who also just started new careers in IT. Danielle was hired into an entry level role with not much experience and has now advanced in her role with the new knowledge she gained.

You can find some more information about the program on the Grow with Google page.
