How should I list my Coursera course or Specialization on my CV, resume, or LinkedIn profile?

When I completed my first Coursera course, I wanted to include it as my part of my educational background but I wasn't quite sure how. What are your thoughts?

@Laura , first, congratulations on completing a course! Which course? What do you think about online learning?

This is a challenging question because you can’t really put it under “education “ even though it is an education. I might add a section called either “professional development “ or “personal development “ depending on how the course relates to your career.

Below is copy & paste of some of the relevant bits of my CV. The formatting is a bit borked but you get the idea. Maybe there are better ways to highlight courses, but thus far this approach does reasonably well.

As for linked in, I just put it under certifications.

On a related note, the official advise Coursera gives is this:

code:
Frequently Asked Questions

How should I represent my completed Coursera Specialization Certificate on my resume/C.V.?

We'd recommend "Applied Data Science with Python, a 5-course specialization by University of Michigan on Coursera. Specialization Certificate earned on August 19, 2018".

If I were to give some advice to coursera I'd say that this recommendation could do with some work. Maybe it would be a good idea to get recruiters and content providers to help us students write about our Coursera experiences effectively!

The current recommendation is very wordy -- and CV's are supposed to be one page! (in the UK, at least). Ergo, lets cut some back on some of the verbiage and drop irrelevant info.

For example, does a recruiter/hiring manger actually give a shit about the day? I don't think I've ever seen a CV with specific days mentioned! This little detail highlights the fact that not a great deal of thought has gone into that FAQ answer.

Much better would be give the details of the course and then 1-2 bullets point about the course (with some keyword optimisation). This would obviously require the help of industry, recruitment and course providers.

Anyway, here is a snippet of my CV :

Work Experience

Junior Software Developer

XXX COMPANY 2018-present.
  • bullet points about my job go here.

Formal Education

  • BA(hons) Philosophy, 1st class, XXX University. 20XX-20XX
  • A-levels in Psychology (A), Law (B), and History (B) at XXX College. 20XX-20XX

Further Education

Applied Data Science using Python

University of Michigan, Coursera ‘Specialization’, 2018.
  • This five course specialisation covered machine learning, data visualisation, network analysis, etc using various Python libraries (e.g. Sklearn, Numpy, Pandas, and Matplotlib).

Deep Learning

deeplearning.ai, Coursera ‘Specialization’, 2018-2019 (* in progress 😉.
  • Five course specialization covering Convolutional Neural Networks, hyperparameter tuning, etc.

On a related note, I just realised I've failed to take my own advice when it comes to my CV, lol.

Why not under the education section ? Is a Coursera (MOOC) Education no education because it is not a formal one ? As alternative, you can use "Further Education."

I think you should test the first one and how the feedback is. In todays times every HR-Manager should hear about MOOC´s and what they are.
@Marcus , there are many forms of education, but a resume wants to know what your formal education is. What schools have you attended? If you took a course online that was accredited by a University and counts as a course, you can list that. But for the most part, a Coursera course doesn’t have the usual rigors of an institution course. It is more of a personal development ot professional development experience.

Great points raised here.

I'd imagine that how courses are listed on a CV/resume depends (to some extent) on the expectations/standards for a person's industry and location.

@Judith, I've completed Leadership through Social Influence and Animal Behavior and Welfare.

I have Coursera as “Independent Studies” on my resume, but I think I’ll update it with “Further Education”

I’ve heard from recruiters it’s a great signifyer of a self-starter/ go-getter which is someone companies are always looking for at any role/level
You could also put this as part of your cover letter showing that your interest in a subject area is diverse.

@Laura , did you enjoy those courses? Did it help you understand better how Coursera works? Were there lively discussions? Thanks. 😀

Yes, I liked both courses and it was definitely helpful in deepening my understanding of how Coursera works, @Judith. Animal welfare can be a controversial topic so there were some interesting discussions in the course forums. I also happened to meet another learner who is living and working in Faisalabad, Pakistan, which is where I'm helping to start a companion animal welfare organization. That was serendipitous!
Wow, @Laura ! That is so exciting to meet someone from Pakistan!
It’s also so productive to have challenging discussions. Perhaps you can bring some of these discussions here, we could use some good challenges.😀 It’s so good that you have taken these courses too, to understand the unique opportunities online education presents.
