It’s so much fun and so satisfying to sing. When a favorite song is being played, you can’t help but sing along.

But what if you don’t sing “in tune”?

Some of your notes just don’t hit the right pitch. Do you still sing out loud? Do you feel self conscious and sing soft? Have you ever been told by a music teacher not to sing?

If you are a person who sings in tune, does it bother you if your friend sings out of tune? Do you tell her/him to stop singing?

Can a person who sings out of tune be taught to sing in tune?

Please share some of your thoughts and experiences about singing in and out of tune.

I think no teacher deserves this name if they suggest giving up.
A good teacher draws resources from appearent lack of skills.
A guitar is a guitar, a bass is a bass.

I strictly can't say where this ability of singing out of tune comes from.
I'm sure there also are neurological views on the subject.

I would start with a cultural view.
Not all the cultures developed the same rhythms we are used.
History is full of legends of naturally musical people:
- Ligurians according to Greeks, or Amazonas according to Spaniards

Blues reflects the different tonal scales used in Dark Africa
As well as some dialects are said to have had an anatomical origin
Yet it's enough to be born and live there to repeat the same sounds.

So it's also about imitation
Music is basically how you're taught in.

I personally think I'm tuned and guess notes but don't sing.
So I tried to sing along with music in my car to train somewhat
I easily shifted in making a mock of the singer and guess what?
I discovered that different languages need different approaches
That fast speaking Spanish for example arises from the throat

If you are allowed to enjoy something and test your skills, then you’ll be able to tune yourself.

Cordial greetings @Judith,

I see your post with great joy, feel what you say, in my opinion i can say, that’s if we are out of tune with the song more than the vocal technique, we do it maybe because we pay more attention to the great memories along with that song and that’s make us happy or any other sensation.

Then for me, i will let that my friend sing even out tone, because for sure, beside her/him its fun and sharing a nice moment

Kind regards.

@Luis Gerardo Ayala B. , you are such a special, kindhearted person. What a beautiful thing to say...that singing together is sharing a nice moment with a friend, so it doesn’t matter what it sounds like, it’s the fun in sharing!
I hope you have enjoyed singing together with many friends.

that is so inappropriate for a teacher or a friend! i have a friend who is not very well in singing or singing in tune but when i see him happy when he is singing make me feel good because im sure these out of tunes will make him good singer.

the only thing that i can do for him is just try to help him to make him better not to break his heart!

i think this is the right to do especially as teacher . .!

@mohamadreza_kazemian thank you for your excellent advice. Singing makes people happy! No matter what kind of voice you have, you should always sing.

So what can a chorus music teacher do when a student who can’t carry a tune wants to sing in the chorus?

teacher are not just book teachers! they should teach the life and what the books said.

so if a singer cant carry a tune teacher should help them to get through this.not just by the theory of the music,by giving the student Positive Energy or some thing like that.

you know i think any sound in this world can be nice in each position.like a broken Violin! beoken Violins has really annoying sound that never can be use in orchestra! but they used to be in horror movies! yes broken violins with high notes and scary rhythm can make scary feeling!

the point is,no sound is bad. you should just find the best position for your sound :)

I more or less try to sing in tune. If I get out of tune, I try to correct it. If a friend sings out of tune… well… that person is enjoying the music, so it’s ok to me even if that person is singing out of tune. After all, what matters is loving music and enjoying it in your own way!

@Archisha Bhar , this is such a good  way to look at it! I have come to the same conclusion, that if a person is singing out of tune, so what? They are enjoying music and that’s wonderful. Honestly, when I was younger, it would annoy me to sit next to someone at a concert who sang out of tune. I don’t feel this way any more, thankfully.😀
