What are 5 interesting facts about the human brain?

Do you remember that iconic scene from the movie Jerry Maguire (1996) when the little boy announces, "The human head weighs 8 pounds?" Here's a 5-second clip – it's pretty cute.

What facts can you share about the human brain? It doesn't matter where you learned the facts – they could be from pop culture or from neuroscience research. We learn in so many different ways.

One of the facts I find most interesting about the human brain is that "neurons that fire together wire together." In other words, our habits form deeper and deeper grooves in our brains the more we practice them. This is true of both healthy and unhealthy habits/thinking. Lots of people talk about this in different ways – I first learned about it from the meditation teacher Tara Brach. In this short blog post, she discusses some examples of how this fact affects us in daily life.

While many grow up hearing the phrase "practice makes perfect," the reality of our neurons and their synaptic connections (how neurons communicate) is that "practice makes permanent" - just as @Laura mentions, we reinforce both correct understanding and misconceptions as we continue to use them.

One of my favorite facts about the human brain is that it's *constantly* learning, whether that be in a classroom, from a friend, or simply walking down the street taking in the environment. The phrase "use it or lose it" describes the idea that if there's a specific skill we want to retain, we need to keep practicing it, whether that be a second language, a sport, or a mathematical procedure. While we need to practice, the most exciting part is that we can keep learning, growing our knowledge, improving our skills, and redefining how we operate in the world.

I totally agree! I think having a positive mindset plays a major in transferring the practice to habit. I started working on some tools of new mindset and the improvement is happening.
