Does a Data Scientist need to be better at statistics than a software engineer and better at software engineering than a statistician?
Yes, it is true to some extent. But how much better depends on what role you want to take up. I have worked with Statisticians, worked as a data scientist and an ML engineer and worked as a hardcore software developer who productionalized those models, built services. Depends upon the project and ask, your role. Over time, you will see yourself feeling the need to learn a little more stats/math and a little more software, devops.
