@Claire , what are the various badges you can earn here and how do you get them? If you keep this system, it would be nice to know. For example, I suddenly got a beta tester and leadership one. I have no idea how? How long do they last? What are they?? Thanks.

You can see many of the badges if you click "Show all badges" under the badge list in the sidebar. There you can also see a hint as to how each badge was earned. Once you have earned a badge it can not be taken away from you.

The initial badges serve as reinforcement of positive activities - responding to someone, making a new thread etc. - these are all things we want to encourage members to do, so we want to make sure they are recognized for doing so early on.

There are also badges for participating in various specific forums, particularly for responding to others' questions. These represent the level of interest someone has in a topic, and, to some degree, the level of mastery they have in it.

We do not plan to share the exact criteria for earning any badge since we don't want to encourage people to make posts simply for the sake of earning badges.
Thanks, @Claire I haven’t noticed any sidebars here. I have been using the dropdown menu to navigate. I am using an I pad and wonder if this is why I don’t see one.
It is a good idea not share the criteria because as we learned, people might post ...#$.* just to get a badge, LOL.
I had just wondered how many different kinds there were, etc...everything that sidebar should tell me!
Also, @Claire ....what is that little bar graph showing by our icons? I saw that yours is almost half blue filled.? Thanks for being so patient with all my questions.

@Judith I think that bar is about the number of badges we earn. I edited my profile not to display them and that bar disappeared under my icon.

@Claire, I have enrolled in beta testing on another thread, though I am already beta testing courses since 2015. Was I supposed to re-register and repeat the process? Since that thread is closed, I had to ask Here.

Hi @Denise and Hi @Judith .

Welcome back @Namrata Tejwani ! Great to see you here too! 🙂

Hi @Denise , I recall the participation level jumped on EdX in one of the course where they used "yellowdig", it has similar features. And having an "@" option is just too good, I always wanted it.

Sounds great @Namrata Tejwani ! Hopefully, this platform will help Coursera that way too.

Everything I this platform looks so exciting that from the time, I got an email about the launch today, I kept visiting the community again and again and have been loggedin for many hours at stretch. Badges is one feature, that is making me intrigued and each time I see a new account, I am looking for the additional badge they have and what it implies.
@Namrata Tejwani ! How truly wonderful to see you again! I hope you have been well and will enjoy this new community.

@Denise, please how did you edit yours? And please what's the actual for that icon?
Thank you.

@Judith, I guess because you're using an iPad, you've been unable to see some features. And these features will be revealed to you if and only if you use a laptop or a desktop.
@Claire, am I right? @Denise, what do you think?

Hi @Terry , yes my earlier guess was correct. If you select "no" on the displaying your badges option under your profile settings, that bar and the display of badges underneath disappears. Please remember to click on "save" after your changes before leaving the page for them to take effect. I selected "no" for the title and reputation display as well, which got rid of the other extras around my icon. 🙂 The number of replies remains though.

@Terry As for your other comment, you may be correct. I do not have an iPad at the moment. I use a normal computer and a mobile phone. What I see on the mobile phone is slightly different than what I see on the normal computer. The computer screen shows more of the features as you say. Someone with both an iPad and a computer may be able to confirm it better I suppose. 🙂

@Denise, thank you for sharing the tips with me.
Yes, I equally use a laptop and a mobile phone to access the Coursera platform. I appreciate it better when i use a laptop.

@Terry, i think, this editing of profile, doesn't work when someone is using hand held devices because i din't notice an option when i went for editing through my mobile. Although, there is a an option to do so through your desktop i guess.

@Mohammad Sameer Hasan, well, I haven't tried editing my profile though. I only noticed that @Denise doesn't have badges nor the bar attached to her avatar even when you view her profile. It looked strange because many of us here have our badges and the bars visible, that was why I asked her how she did it.

@Terry I guess so because i can see many option under additional settings in settings option in my profile. You can display your badges, your reputation, your community title, as well as decide whom to receive messages from either the one you trust or from everyone.

@Terry , Yes, @Denise has made changes to her profile and i think she prefers it that way i guess.

Yes, I saw that too @Mohammad Sameer Hasan. I think I enjoy seeing that now, maybe in future I'll hide them. :)
Yes, I guess she does too. Would you want to hide yours?

@Mohammad Sameer Hasan, all these options are available on mobile devices as well.

@Maryam @Terry, I think you are right. My page didn't load well i guess that's why i didn't see an option then, but, now i can easily see it through my phone as well.

Hi @Mohammad Sameer Hasan @Terry @Maryam , yes, I can also confirm all these options are available from mobile phone and they work when you do the changes through mobile phone as well. Always remember to click on "save" though before you leave the page. 🙂

Yes, I prefer some privacy on those displays. It felt like some "showing off" (for me) earlier on. I might change my mind later on... Let's see how it goes... 🙂
@Mohammad Sameer Hasan, good to hear that you could find them.
