Hi. I am having the same issue, and it seems that a lot more people too. This issue has been around for months and it looks like it will stay that way for a long period of time.
It's very frustrating, time wasting and unrespectful.

That is very frustrating I am paying to learn more for my job and I can't get help.
Hi @Rho and @Dannybreit,

... and it seems that a lot more people too. This issue has been around for months and it looks like it will stay that way for a long period of time.

Sorry to hear that. So this issue has been disturbing learners for a long time. Here are my suggestions:

1- Please flag the item using the flag icon on the assignment page, as explained here: Report a problem with a course

2- Report it directly to Coursera's support team, too. They may not be able to fix it themselves. But they're able to reach the course team to make them aware of the issue. They'll hopefully fix it soon: Chat with us

All the best.

Where is a mentor at? If I am putting in wrong answers where is a mentor?
Where is an actual human that I can talk too if this is an ongoing issue.

Me too! It's impossible!

Mentors are available in some courses but they only check the discussion forums for the course, not this broader community. If there is a mentor for this course you should be able to get in touch by posting in the discussion forums for the course itself.

Alternatively, if you let people here know which course you're talking about, someone may be able to help.

If it's a problem with the course that needs to be fixed by the instructor, please follow @Maryam's 2nd instruction to report it.

Use this command

sudo chmod 777 /home/lab/super_secret_file.txt

hello any update on this?

To terminate the process you will have to first find its PID using ps command.

sudo ps -ax | grep “totally_not_malicious”

You will get a list of processes. Now search for one having the pathname given in the lab. Note its PID.

Use kill command to kill the process. Don’t forget to use sudo.

For VLC

  sudo apt update

  sudo apt upgrade

If the update fails then type

  sudo apt --fix-broken install

This will automatically fix the issues and upgrade. If it doesn’t run the upgrade command again.

And just a tip, never give all permissions to a file i.e. (777). The most common ones that you can give is (644). Giving unnecessary permissions to file is not a good practice in Linux and in IT administration. But if for this lab you are not getting points then you can try giving all permissions.

I hope this helps.

I had to do some extensive research on this because nothing I learned on the course was helping with updating VLC. I found out that these commands fix the problem. For me anyway.

 sudo apt-get update --fix-missing

use it to run updates and ensure packages are up to date and there is no new version available for the packages. Once you done with the update, run the below command to force packages to find the missing dependencies and install them:

sudo apt-get install -f

Hope it helps✌🏽
