I just joined a few free courses on Coursera and I don't understand how courses work. Are they designed like I can learn from the course any time, like I join a course now but I start learning after a few months. Or are they time specific and a course that is going on right now, I have to learn it in these days.
Are there classmates? Can I talk to them? Can I communicate with the teacher? Will I be getting assignments?

First of all welcome to Coursera @Huzaifa !
Mostly it depends on the course you are taking. Like, some free courses have all the quizzes and assignments open to everyone. While in some courses in Audit mode, you cannot submit them.

It is better to follow the weekly schedule of the courses provided to complete them in time bound manner. But if you are unable to complete keep up with the schedule due to any reason, you can always join the next schedule when you are ready to learn. Also you can always complete the courses ahead of the schedule.

You can try to connect with other learners on course forum.

In light of this pandemic, since many of us have more spare time, is it not possible to take lessons and submit quizzes and assignments well ahead of the scheduled time and be able to purchase our certificate well ahead of schedule?

In particular, I’m considering taking the “Getting Started with AWS Machine Learning” which might fall into this criteria.

Thank you.

Namaste. When the world is suffering, industries shutting down, there is threat to business as well as life, still human being is very positive and firmly believes in bringing the positive change. This change is sensed and felt by education segment. As a blessing, many organizations are trying to reach to the students so that learning should continue and can help students motivated.

Coursera is one of such blessings. I wish, the students of my institute can avail this wonderful benefit of learning from the best teachers and explore about plethora of topics which they could not explore till date.

Coursera to Campus will be beneficial for the teachers to enrich and bring a newness in their teaching pedagogy.

Thanks for allowing us to connect. I pray, let us all be blessed and stay safe to learn a lot.
