I think by doing what is required for a particular job or task, you not only stick to basics but also erase too much distraction from around by focussing on important aspects only which let's you achieve more and even Mentor your peers. Mentoring can also take the form of training sub-ordinates which is another form of performing more than others. If you are giving your best in terms of time, energy and knowledge, you are bound to get noticed by your superiors and with the right qualifications, you will be first prospect when they consider a promotion or more better title.
