A course without any video transcript

hi coursera staff,

I am a beta tester, as well as Coursera plus member.

I have tested very nice courses from SoFi.  Last week I came across a course from this institute, and started taking this class as a plus member. It is a good class. Still, I noticed, none of the lectures there have any transcript! How did it pass beta testing?

This is the course

Could you please  bring thisto the attention of right people, so they can fix this soon.

If this was posted in error, please provide the transcript soon.

thank you for your attention.

@Sonal Patel How do you know that the existence of subtitles is a must criterion for courses to be released? While they are certainly helpful and presumably not a lot of effort (most are obviously automatic transcriptions) I always assumed that providing subtitles is at the leisure of the course creator.

@TomHas,  for accessibility, it is important to have subtitles.  If a person is deaf, they experience the video by reading the ‘subtitles’. Even blind learners often use their ‘screen reader’ to read the transcript. So, it is very important for the course providers to have the transcript for making the videos accessible for the disabled.  Hope you understand and appreciate the value of having a transcript now. thanks.

Hi @Sonal Patel

Is it possible now to flag those videos and inform them about the missing transcripts?

yes, @Archisha Bhar  I did flag, still, there are too many videos, and I feel that should be done in the best testing stage. If one or two videos are missing transcripts, they can be fixed later, still, no video having any transcript creates problems for many ‘disabled’ learners.

This is a great class and instructors are great too, so hopefully, we can educate them about various disabilities. Not, having a transcript will make it difficult for a ‘deaf’ person to view any videos.  In a learning platform like Coursera, instructors should be able to recognize the needs of the disabled and have alternative ways for them to experience the class.  Coursera has great features for instructors to generate and edit transcripts. So, they should be aware of the needs of ‘disabled’,

@Sonal Patel I recognize your point which makes perfect sense. But then I still have to wonder why you do not make it initially for clarity instead of subtly blaming beta testers for whatever oversights…?

thanks, @TomHas  I am not really blaming any beta tester.  Since I am part of this forum as a beta tester, I shared it here first, hoping a Coursera staff can take it to the partner organization.  Sorry, maybe this is the wrong forum, so please excuse my ignorance. I will send the message through their accessibility channel, to reach the staff who can convey the message to the partner organization.  I work continuously with ‘blind’ individuals who have amazed me with their capabilities to learn online.  So, my heart is constantly looking at their world, which has given me a ‘new sight’.  Sure, I will try to let the staff know.  Please excuse me if my post has caused any inconvenience for anyone here.
